Can Black Friday Shopping Be Ethical?

For the last few years, I’ve compiled tons of green beauty deals for Black Friday. As I’ve committed myself to making more ethical, sustainable, and minimalist purchases, my perspective on Black Friday is a bit different. My hope is that talking about it will encourage others to feel the same.

The Black Friday mindset to buy anything, everything, plus more, and at dirt-cheap prices (which, in the long run actually aren’t that cheap) makes me shudder. We can get so caught up in the shopping and the hype, that we often disregard the quality and longevity of the things we buy, not to mention never think about the impact our purchase makes in the long-run.

This year, be a more mindful consumer. Think about how your purchases affect you, the environment, and the communities around you. Purchase products that are high-quality, long-lasting, and have a low impact on the environment. Support brands that give back to communities, have beneficial missions, communicate transparently, and treat their employees fairly.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be a great time to support small/local businesses and organizations that give back. A lot of people I know complain that ethical, sustainable goods are too expensive and refuse to purchase them. This is the season you can get a discount on ethical products while also showing your support to brands. Perhaps your gifts might even encourage loved ones to think and shop more ethically too.

Emma Olsen, founder of ethical clothing shop, Hazel & Rose put it best:
When it comes to Black Friday, or any holiday shopping, the same buying rules apply for me: items must be ethically made and I must be thoughtful about my purchases. I don’t let myself get caught up in the hype or the sale. If it’s not ethically made and I don’t absolutely LOVE it, I don’t buy it, period. Part of the beauty of buying fewer and better items means I don’t need a bargain because there’s no goal to maximize the number of “things”. That said, I also recognize that sustainable and ethical fashion comes at a higher price. That price is wholeheartedly justified by the quality and craftsmanship of the item, but can be a barrier for some shoppers. It’s nice to offer a discount once in a while to reach more people who want to shop ethically.” Read the entire blog post here, including perspectives about Black Friday from other ethical shop owners within the Ethical Fashion Retailers Network.

This holiday season, I’ll be staying away from social media and my computer by spending lots of quality time with family. I’ll shop for holiday gifts and also for green beauty things I’ve been lusting over due to the discounts, but I’ll only get what I truly need and not feel the desire to “stock up” as I might have before. To keep in the right mindset, I’ve been thinking a lot about product shelf life and how much I actually use versus how much I buy. And because I have such limited shelf space now that I’m married!
