Get News-Savvy With theSkimm

No matter how hard I try to stay on top of current events and daily news, I somehow always seem to fall behind. Life is busy enough, who has time to sit down and read every newspaper or magazine from cover to cover? (Okay, maybe you do have that time and if you allow yourself those kinds of moments, I envy you.) What overwhelms me the most about staying “in the know” with news is the boundless number of media outlets there now are. How can I realistically read everything I need to know from every news source I want, while I’m always on-the-go?

Initially I gave up, continued to feel embarrassed by friends who seem more passionate about reading the news than I am, and forced myself into the habit of watching my local news every morning while getting ready for work. Depressing and boring. That is, before I discovered theSkimm.

Feeling distraught over not being up-to-date on everything that’s happening in the world everyday is a thing of the past now that I read theSkimm. This email newsletter serves up smart, witty, and concise details of all the headlines you need to know for the day all in one place. Founded by 2 friends in their 20s both with a love for storytelling, media and with careers as producers at NBC News, The Skimm was born out of the observation that reading the news is time-consuming and more often treated as a hobby than a necessity. Daneille Weisberg and Carly Zakin ingeniously decided they would create an easy, engaging platform where readers would only need to “skimm” to get the details of important current events and breaking news from solid news sources.

Whether I’m reading off of my smartphone on the bus commuting to work, or at my computer taking a quick email break,  I’m easily able to access a handful of the day’s top, need-to-know highlights every morning. theSkimm always begins with an important and sometimes, chuckle-worthy quote relating to a recent news story or event and then follows with pithy yet well-researched news summaries. I also like that the newsletter includes links to news sources and articles if you want to dig deeper. theSkimm explains a lot of complex world news in a concise but intelligent way that is digestible to the average reader.

I’m also a fan of the witty subtitles for the news summaries (ie. “what to say when…”) and the clever, intelligent voice that makes theSkimm so enjoyable to read and dare I say it, addicting. Since I signed up, I’ve spread word about theSkimm to a few friends who felt they were lacking daily news in their life and now they can’t stop reading.

theSkimm has helped me enjoy reading the news and feel way more confident in knowing what’s going on in the world, now sometimes even one-uping my news-obsessed boyfriend, one Skimm at a time.

Oh. I need this. Most news is so depressing that I avoid it, but then it gets embarrassing when people are talking about Ebola and I’m like, “HUH?” (Duh.)

Hey this sounds interesting. I like that the skimm leaves out all the negative stuff. That’s why I stopped watching the news. So darned depressing. I’m going to check this out. Thanks for sharing!

theSkimm does not leave out negative news. They do deliver a great, quick-to-read daily newsletter with well-written summaries of important news and current events. Reading theSkimm keeps me better informed and well-rounded regarding what is happening in the world and I only have to read one source (and do more exploring on my own) rather than reading 10 different newspapers a day. It’s a great daily read, I’d definitely recommend checking it out and signing up!
