Sappho Organics’ Superior Organic Liquid Foundations

Sappho Organics Foundation

Let’s be honest, I don’t wear a full-coverage foundation every day nor do I necessarily need to. But there are definitely times when I yearn for those heavy-duty, long-lasting conventional foundation formulas that I could easily just slap on and forget about. Can you relate? Thankfully, I’ve been testing products from Sappho Organics and have found what I think is the highest caliber of organic liquid foundations. I feel no need to fall down the conventional makeup hole anytime soon.Sappho Organics Liquid Foundation

Sappho Organics is a Canadian organic makeup company founded by Emmy-nominated makeup artist, JoAnn Fowler. While working on the American T.V. show, “The L Word”, the show’s actresses brought to JoAnn’s attention the issue of chemicals in cosmetics. Prompting to research cosmetic safety further, JoAnn found the need for creating effective, healthier cosmetics. What resulted was Sappho Organics, a makeup line that could challenge the performance of chemically laden products, include full ingredient disclosure, and adhere to the strictest safety measures.

Along with Gressa’s serum foundation, I would say Sappho Organics has the best organic, liquid foundation out there. Formulated from natural minerals suspended in a base of organic aloe juice and organic jojoba oil, Sappho’s organic Liquid Foundation ($52, 30ml) is the epitome of superior formulation. It is an easily blendable, non-greasy, smooth foundation that is both long-lasting, flawless looking, and non-irritating. Also, The Detox Market now carries Sappho Organics products! (Shop HERE.)

The Liquid Foundation has a creamy, easily blendable formula that does not feel or look heavy on the skin. The foundation simply sinks into my skin and doesn’t sit on my pores nor look cakey. In my opinion, it feels more like a BB cream that can be built up for heavier coverage. I can wear this foundation for hours without needing a touch-up and without my skin feeling irritated. I don’t find the need to use a setting powder either. Compared to other foundations, I’d say Sappho’s is not completely matte but rather, provides a natural finish close to the appearance of your skin. It also has a very pleasing sweet, fresh scent.

Available in 8 different shades, I tried out 3 foundation shades: Rachel, Lisa, Kate. Lisa is the perfect shade for me. Lisa is suitable for cool-toned, fairer olive skin types like myself and falls in between the other 2 foundation shades I tried.

From L to R: Rachel, Lisa, Kate

Rachel is the lightest of the 3 shades I tried, and while good for olive-leaning undertones, I believe it is better suited for those with fairer, porcelain skin. Kate is the darker of the shades I tried and is good for those who have a tanned, deeper olive skin tone with warm undertones. My sister matches perfectly to Kate.

Sappho’s website needs to provide better pictures of foundation swatches, though you can purchase samples before you settle on a shade. Nuciya has much better descriptions of the foundation shades and much clearer photos of actual swatches, here (scroll below the product selection for pictures).

The foundation comes in a lightweight, plastic bottle with a screw-on cap that is easy to travel with. The pump for this foundation is sold separately. While I prefer to have the pump and believe it makes my life easier, I think it is also just as effective and simple to apply this foundation without the pump. The choice just depends on your preference.

For a more flawless application, I’ve found that applying Sappho’s Liquid Foundation with their new Oval Buffing Foundation Brush ($27) is absolute perfection. These strange, hairbrush-looking makeup brushes have been on-trend for a while in the makeup world and much to my hesitation, they actually are incredibly effective for applying foundation!

Sappho Organics Oval Foundation Brush

The Oval Buffing Foundation Brush utilizes tightly-packed, soft bristles to allow for easy buffing and a truly, airbrushed look to the skin. Sometimes I apply the Liquid Foundation with my fingertips or a blending sponge, both of which work well, I find that using the Oval Buffing brush allows for this foundation to settle more naturally on my skin and really helps to spread the product evenly, providing that flawless look. This brush features super soft, cruelty-free bristles, making applying Sappho’s foundation a very easy and a pleasant task.  I highly recommend picking this brush up if you’re thinking of trying the Liquid Foundation!

Sappho promises “formulations that can challenge the performance of chemically laden alternatives 100% transparency of ingredients, to become greener as we grow and to remain a positive presence in this world.”

It is such an amazing formula, Mayah! If you love Gressa’s foundation, you’ll be even more pleased with Sappho. I personally find Gressa’s foundation to be better for fuller coverage and evening events but it is also a bit drying for my skin. Hope you get to try this out! 🙂
