Plein Vanity- Of Interest

Some “Of Interest” stories and news that are currently on my mind: green beauty deals, a zero-waste gift registry, “Conscious Beauty” launching at Ulta, and new sustainable fashion collaborations.

Zero Waste Shop Gift Registry

Package Free Shop provides customers with the ability to create a zero waste gift registry.

From big life events (getting married, buying a new house, celebrating a birthday) to letting others treat you, the Package Free Shop is making it easier to give and receive gifts that are zero waste with their new option to create a gift registry among their catalog of products. This is great news for anyone who is trying to shop more eco-consciously, and an easy way to reduce gifts that are harmful to the environment or are things you won’t actually use. Signing up to create a registry is free and easy.

Red Apple Lipstick Matte Eyeshadow

Red Apple Lipstick released a new collection of matte pressed eyeshadows, and each eyeshadow’s name was created by a customer.

Red Apple Lipstick’s pressed eyeshadows are a tried and true favorite of mine. Not only do RAL eyeshadows come in a variety of colors and finishes, have a clean and effective formula, but the brand regularly hosts fun naming competitions for their products and selects their favorite names as permanent product names. The latest competition was to name their gorgeous, new collection of matte eyeshadows. While I entered with my best ideas for eyeshadow names and didn’t make the cut, the winning names have been released and they are delightful. RAL estimates the matte eyeshadows should be available for purchase Winter 2020.

Credo at Ulta

“Conscious Beauty” launches at Ulta, featuring many green beauty brands we love.

It may seem like I always bring up Ulta when it comes to mainstream beauty shops, but I honestly like Ulta because of the convenience for reaching many customers across the U.S., a great variety in brands (drugstore and upscale), and their general affordability including regular discounts and sales. Well, as if I could not love Ulta more: they have launched their “Conscious Beauty” curation with many small and well-known green beauty brands becoming available on Ulta.com and in select Ulta stores. The curation is a partnership with Credo Beauty (go figure), and Loop, which is a new waste-free shopping/returns service created by the founder of TerraCycle (there’s not much information about the service other than it launches in 2021 and you have to sign up for updates).

Thanks to the partnership with Credo, Ulta’s “Conscious Beauty” line features some beloved and exciting green beauty brands like Axiology, HAN, Rituel De Fille, Josh Rosebrook, One Love Organics, and a ton more. It pretty much looks like it’s an extension of Credo’s offerings, and for now only the beginning of more green beauty brands to come to Ulta. It’s not totally clear, but it looks like this curation is also included in regular Ulta coupons/discounts. I have a ton of Ulta Rewards points to use, so I’m looking forward to seeing if I can purchase with my points and gain more points. This is very exciting news in bringing green beauty to the masses!

Baggu x Hansel and Basel socks

Baggu x Hansel from Basel socks, and tote bag collaboration with Black designers.

One of my favorite sustainable bag brands, Baggu launched another fun collaboration with designer sock and accessories company, Hansel from Basel. I was able to snag a pair from Baggu x Hansel from Basel’s sock collection before they immediately sold out, and they are my favorite colorful socks to wear. The new collection is just as cute and whimsical, with three lovely designs. My favorite is the Woodgrain style. $14, Baggu.

Baggu also teamed up with the org, Where are the Black Designers (WATBD) to create a set of limited-edition Merch Totes. Four designers were commissioned to create artwork within the theme “Support Black Creatives.” 100% of the proceeds go back to WATBD, “to further invest in resources to support, empower, and amplify Black creatives.” It seems that most of the bags have sold out, but the tote created by artist Chelsea Alexander is still available. $20, Baggu.

“Connected” series on Netflix.

The latest Netflix series my husband and I have binge-watched (and effectively finished within a few days) is “Connected”. This five-episode series follows the science journalist, Latif Nasser as he investigates “the surprising and intricate ways in which we are connected to each other, the world and the universe” through traveling around the world and interviewing experts. Not only is the information that Nasser uncovers extremely interesting and mind-blowing, you learn a lot about cool topics in a humorous and intriguing format.

The first two episodes are my favorite: “Surveillance” includes some much-needed information about data collection and social media, and “Poop” is well, a unique take on excretion and how poop itself says a lot about our world. If you love investigative reporting, or just love learning about the world you’ll enjoy this! I hope Netflix has plans for more episodes in the near future.
