moss: Power From Plants and Botanicals to Luxurious, Organic Skincare

The “couture skincare” brand called, moss was created by physicist, Celestyna Higgins in 2015, inspired by her struggles with teenage and adult acne. moss, which stands for “Modern Organic Sacred Skincare” draws upon the natural power of plans and botanicals to provide luxurious, effective non-toxic skincare. The brand’s specialty remains in correcting acne and aging issues.

The simplistic beauty of moss’ packaging and design and their unique use of unusual and luxurious ingredients have always peaked my interest. The brand has stood out in the clean skincare world for their effective formulas, which utilize high quality, out-of-the-ordinary ingredients.

To me, moss products are the very definition of “slow skincare”. Formulas and ingredients are thoughtfully curated and successfully hone in on specific skincare goals (such as resolving dry skin, acne, or irritation). Products are handmade in “micro batches” so that brand new products aren’t consistently pumped out, but rather there’s a solid, trusted lineup of products that actually work, no need for bells and whistles or over-the-top advertising. The top notch formulas, high quality ingredients, and expertise behind the curations speak for themselves.

Illumina Vitamin C Perfecting Treatment Intensif: I initially didn’t think too much of this facial treatment, because I’d assumed that it was just like any other serum. With claims that Illumina “decongests acne-prone skins and smooths wrinkles and discoloration for mature skins,” I also figured that it wouldn’t have much impact on my dry, sensitive, combination skin. I should have known better.

To be clear, Illumina is a vitamin C and exfoliating serum in one, so really, it’s like a skin booster to be used in addition to a moisturizer or facial oils. The texture is quite unique: I was expecting an oil, yet Illumina has a liquified, gel-like feel. The serum quickly dries down to a solid, protective layer when applied to the skin, locking in nourishment and hydration.

I applied this treatment as moss instructs: in the evenings only, after cleansing and before moisturizing, dotting the product sparingly amongst all four quadrants of the face, then massaging gently into the skin. After continued use, the treatment did seem to lessen any blemishes or spots on my face, contributing to an all-over smoother texture and appearance. I also appreciated that the treatment caused my face to feel more firm and supple. I think the high price tag is warranted for such a unique and effective face product, that is not only a treat for the skin, but a welcome surprise. $145 for 30ml (full size).

Beurre Céleste Honey Antioxidant Infusion Recovery Mask in Cleansing Baume: I was very excited to try this product out, moss touts the benefits of Beurre Céleste as 3 products in one, functioning as “an oil cleanser, cleansing balm, raw honey cleanser and hydrating mask”.

The star ingredient in this product is the raw Nebraska honey, never processed or heated, maintaining the nutrient-heavy quantities of the raw honey’s natural benefits like antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and amino acids. Studies have shown that raw honey also has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory benefits for the skin. The raw honey also contributes to Beurre Céleste’s qualities as a rich, emollient balm. Other standout ingredients include sunflower oil, macadamia oil, kokum butter, sea buckthorn extract, all of which contribute to the product’s powerful formula that is protective and restorative for skin.

This cleansing balm feels a bit more rich and heavy than other cleansing balms I have used, such as this similar cleansing balm from de mamiel. For this reason, I feel I am more drawn to using Beurre Céleste in the evenings. The balm’s texture is smooth and melts into skin when applied, making it easy to use and extremely nourishing. I personally love cleansing balms because they gently, effectively cleanse without further dehydrating or stripping my dry skin. I love the nourishing feel of Beurre Céleste and the rich texture. Plus, the cleansing power is so effective, yet so gentle on my skin. A little bit goes a long way to remove daily makeup and grime. The product also provides gentle exfoliation (thanks to granules that may form) and helps to smooth and brighten skin. I love that the potent, natural ingredients help to nourish and protect the skin, especially noticeable when used as a quick, all-over facial mask.

The brand points out that the product’s texture is initially a smooth, hardened balm and with time and temperature, the balm may melt or granulate. This did happen to my product, though it did not mess with the integrity or function of the product. For this slight texture change, moss recommends screwing the balm’s lid on tightly, submerging the jar in hot water and promptly removing it from the water. Then after giving it a good shake, put it in the fridge for 2 hours—the balm’s texture should return to normal.

To use, simply massage Beurre Céleste onto the skin, wet hands, and massage until the oil emulsifies into a milk, and finally rinse off with water. moss stresses that there is no need to use a washcloth with this product. The product’s scent reminds me of faint citrus and honey, which is soothing and pleasing to the senses, without being overpowering.

I would definitely splurge on this product, since it’s not only wonderful to use on dry skin, but is also a multi-use cleanser/mask. If you’re looking for a high-quality cleanser boost, something that is beyond your average cleansing balm, Beurre Céleste should be at the top of your list. $78 for 50ml (full size). Also available at Integrity Botanicals.
