Modern Minerals is a natural beauty brand I have admired for a while now. I got to know the incredibly friendly and thoughtful founder, Diane a bit better at the first ever Indie Beauty Expo in 2015. It was evident to see Diane’s passion, hard work and creativity behind every product and I felt very inspired after meeting her. The brand has since evolved it’s “emotive beauty” collection of mineral makeup products (infused with Lotus Wei’s flower and gemstone alchemy) to include lovely hair care products, Mo Mi by Modern Minerals.

Just like the original makeup line, Mo Mi utilizes high quality organic ingredients that not only benefit the hair and skin, but also provide an “emotive experience” that aims to radiate the positive benefits from our core and outward. The Mo Mi hair collection reflects “a beauty ritual that reminds us that beauty is also about mind, body & mood.”
There are four basic hair care products in the collection that seem suitable for use on a majority hair types: Dry Shampoo, Hydrating Mist (for hair, body & face), Styling Jelly, and Texture Mist. I am nervous when it comes to trying new clean and organic hair products, so I don’t normally branch out beyond using what’s tried and true for my hair. However, I was quite intrigued with the Mo Mi hair collection, as I do love the brand and their formulas. The packaging is pretty and functional, I love the dark bottles and rose-tinted labels with unique and empowering female artwork.
Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo is not only simple to use and effective, it instantly makes hair smell clean and fresh. The packaging is a nice squeezable tube that has a thin nozzle to effortlessly dispense the right amount of dry shampoo onto roots. A whole host of natural ingredients provide a potent, yet gentle formula that absorbs quickly and adds volume to hair. The product has a traditional powder texture, though is lightweight (and has a pink-tinted hue). A little goes a long way, I’ve found that sometimes when I overdo it, I can see a lot of leftover powder sprinkled throughout my hair (which makes it look like I have dandruff). Otherwise, I love how naturally refreshed my hair looks when I apply this dry shampoo. The bottle’s twistable tip also makes it super easy to dispense and apply the hair product.
It has the most beautiful scent I’ve ever experienced from a dry shampoo. The organic blend of lavender, chamomile, and rose essential oils provide an uplifting, fresh and floral scent. If you have used Lotus Wei products before, you will definitely notice a similar, intoxicating scent from this dry shampoo, due to the use of flower and gem essences (this one includes Rose Quartz essence), and a blend of essential oils. Often, I’ll use this dry shampoo because it makes my hair smell so good! I found that this dry shampoo is a wonderful product to use on days when I don’t shampoo my hair, or when it just needs a little pick-me-up. Plus, it’s super easy to use and refreshes hair in an instant! Available at Modern Minerals, $35, 118g.
Hydrating Mist
This versatile product can be used to refresh and hydrate hair, face, and body. Mostly, I enjoy using the Hydrating Mist as a facial toner as it provides a nourishing, lightweight dew and has a fresh and floral scent. Since my hair is stick-straight, this all-over midst provides a nice, natural fragrance but other than that doesn’t really do much else to my hair. It is perfect for perking up my hair (scent-wise) in between days that I don’t shampoo my hair. I reach for this product to nourish my skin (on face and sometimes all-over my body) and in moments I just need a soothing, nice-smelling refresh. Texture Mist
This simple spray delivers extra texture to hair whether it’s a little extra oomph to daily hair or for fancier styling, but without leaving behind a greasy or hard texture on my hair. This product really provides a natural and comfortable bit of texture! With my stick-straight hair, I normally just like adding a bit of texture to my daily hair or when I do a simple updo like a bun. It’s so easy is to use the Texture Mist too, I spray on either dry or slightly damp hair, then splitting hair into small sections, I scrunch the hair moving upwards towards the roots. Or, I flip my hair upside down and use a comb, teasing hair towards the roots. Adding this product to hair to prep for curls also works great, though if you have straight hair like mine, you’ll definitely still need some hairspray to hold the curls. In addition, the same fresh and floral scent from this collection of products makes the Texture Mist something I also use to just freshen up my hair, either in between washes or when I want my hair smelling fresh. Styling Jelly
The Styling Jelly is the only product that I was more cautious about using. My hair naturally gets greasy as the days wear on, and normally I avoid anything that can add to an oily appearance. The Styling Jelly is great for those who have more textured or frizzy hair because it has great hold and doesn’t leave your hair feeling sticky or hard. My husband tried it since he styles his hair daily, and he appreciated the lightweight, smooth texture, and flexible bounce. He did say the scent felt a bit feminine for him and for his styling purposes, the hold felt a bit too light. I have some flyaways and baby hairs so for me, the Styling Jelly has come in handy to control these sometimes messy bits.
I apply the Styling Jelly to either dry or slightly damp hair, and run a tiny dollop of product to hair. Flyaways and baby hairs are instantly tamed! No traces of grease or uncomfortable texture either, just naturally smooth and even-looking hair. Not to mention, this product smells so delightfully soothing, sometimes I’ll just run a little through my hair to calm my senses and keep my hair smelling fresh. Lastly, the Mindful Moods perfume is a delightful treat that I use daily. This essential rollerball perfume provides a soothing, uplifting scent with sweet and floral notes due to organic lavender, chamomile, rose, neroli, and lotus flower essential oils. This beautiful scent smells like the MoMi collection of hair products, it is verdantly fresh, intoxicating, yet light for everyday wear or for special occasions. I keep my rollerball perfume in my bag and love applying it to freshen up and to instill a bit of calm. This perfume is definitely an embodiment of “emotive beauty,” as the fragrance truly makes me feel soothed, happy, and beautiful. It is one beautifully made fragrance that I can’t stop using. The perfume is “infused with the Korean Pink Lotus to bloom into our purest self, with love and self nourishment. I’ve really been enjoying using Mo Mi by Modern Minerals hair care products. These are the first clean hair styling products that I actually use daily and feel totally confident using!
