Limited Edition Products, Lasting Skin Satisfaction: Introducing Apoterra Laboratory

One thing I enjoy about following small beauty and skincare brands that I trust and enjoy, is seeing how products and brands develop over time. It’s always exciting to see beloved products get better formulations or more unique packaging, or even brands developing upon their mission and offerings. Such is the case with the evolution of Apoterra Skincare, a brand I’ve been a loyal fan of for their thoughtful product formulations, beautiful packaging, and transparent communications.

Summer Ready Skin With One Love Organics’ Summer Skin Collection

OLOSummer2-2.jpg

Searching for the perfect skincare collection that will help you beat the summer heat and all its nasty effects on your skin? Look no further, The limited edition Summer Skin Collection from One Love Organics has something to please everyone this season. I purchased all of my products from Integrity Botanicals (I highly recommend this site!) but act quickly, this collection is only available until September 15th or until supplies last!

OLOSummer1

Apple A Day Brightening Facial Cleanser ($29, 5 fl oz)- I’ve never been interested in trying out foaming facial cleansers as I usually find they don’t do much for my skin and actually make my skin feel drier. I also always viewed foaming cleansers as a way for brands try to market products with the sole “fun” factor of making face-cleaning more exciting. Perhaps. However, the unique fruit ingredients in this new OLO cleanser intrigued me and I was fully convinced I needed to try it out.

The Apple A Day cleanser combines cold-pressed apple oil, apple fruit extracts and gentle, natural acids, which OLO claims formulates a perfectly balanced pH formula that will clarify, cleanse and tone the skin. Contrary to my initial thoughts, this cleanser was a joy to use. The light, nourishing formula and foaming texture is the ultimate skin refresher especially on hot, humid days when your skin needs an extra boost. Not only did my face feel refreshed after using the cleanser, it felt very clean and more balanced overall. I can definitely feel and see my skin clearing up since using this cleanser and my face never feels irritated or more dry after using it. This cleanser smells deliciously fruity (thanks to those apple ingredients!) and the foam formula lathers soft and gentle to the skin. I will say, I don’t think I’d grab for this cleanser over my cleansing oils (my favorite OLO cleanser HERE) or cream cleansers (sorry, just my dry skin’s preference), but perhaps for those who have oilier skin or are more prone to sweating in the facial area, you will definitely want to try this effective, clarifying cleanser for the summer.

Ingredients: organic aloe juice (and) water, sodium cocoyl apple amino acids, capryl/caprylyl glucoside, organic glycerin, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, pyrus malus (apple) oil, gluconolactone (and) sodium benzoate, malic acid (and) glycolic acid (and) lactic acid (and) citric acid

Pretty Pores Complexion Toning Mist ($28, 2 fl oz)- Another product that will make your skin go “ahhh!”, the Pretty Pores Complexion Toning Mist is a wonderful complement to the Apple A Day cleanser. This mist is very refreshing to spray on cleansed skin and I often find myself addicted to spritzing my face multiple times during the day (and sniffing the pleasant, light grapefruit scent). This product also utilizes 100% pure fruit water extracted from pink grapefruits, which purifies and energizes skin, is a natural astringent, and includes powerful antioxidant Vitamin C to keep skin glowing. So resourceful, right? It is also impressive that this toning mist only has 3 ingredients, relying on the naturally purifying effects of grapefruit water.

This pure fruit water is extracted from fresh organic grapefruit using an advanced flash distillation technique. It infuses the skin with valuable plant nutrients such as bioavailable vitamins, antioxidants, trace elements and mineral salts found naturally in the fruit. With a natural pH of 4.9, Pretty Pores Complexion Toning Mist is perfect for spritzing the skin post-cleansing to help skin return to its natural acidic state and to infuse the skin with nutrients before moisture application.

I loved the cooling sensation on my face and could noticeably see my skin become less red and irritated. The combination of using this collection’s foaming cleanser and toning mist has improved my overall complexion, keeping my face looking healthy and glowing. The Pretty Pores mist is definitely a summertime staple to maintain a fresh face and keep skin hydrated. For ultimate refreshment, pop this mist in the fridge and feel the ultra-cooling effects of the spray. If you are set on getting the Apple A Day cleanser, be sure to purchase this mist along with it, your skin will thank you.  For me, OLO can do no wrong with their nourishing, cleansing toning mists and the Pretty Pores Toning Mist is no exception. My favorite year-round mist will always be the Elizabeth Dehn for OLO Vitamin D Active Moisture Time Release Mist; it’s perfect for all skin types and keeps my sensitive, dry and irritated skin in line!

Ingredients: organc citrus grandis (grapefruit) fruit water, gluconolactone (and) sodium benzoate

Gardenia Daily Body Serum ($39, 3.8 oz)- My favorite product of the collection, this body serum is an absolute necessity! I love using body oils for the summer because when it’s hot and humid out, they’re lighter to apply on my dry skin but provide enough hydration as the heavier creams I tend to use in the winter. The Gardenia Daily Body Serum pleasantly sinks into the skin and gently nourishes all over. Using this serum keeps me moisturized all day and night without making me feel greasy or irritated.

The scent of gardenia blossoms is one of my weaknesses. To me, this serum’s beautiful floral fragrance evokes summer sunshine and happiness. I cannot get enough of it! The spray bottle top makes it very easy and convenient to spritz this light, nourishing serum all over. I wish there were more product in the bottle but until then, I’m savoring this serum throughout summer! (I snagged a pre-release serum sample thanks to a No More Dirty Looks/OLO promo but bought a full-size immediately when it was released. Read my initial ravings HERE.)

Ingredients: capric/caprylic triglyceride, organic helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, organic camellia sinensis (green tea) seed oil, organic supercritical hippophae rhamnoides (seabuckthorn) oil, calendula officinalis (calendula flower) extract, aspalathus linearis (red rooibos tea) extract, proprietary natural and organic fragrance compounds

Healthy Locks Dry Shampoo ($12, 0.8 oz)- (Sample size, not pictured) Summer humidity can do crazy things to our hair. Having a regular hair cleansing routine in the summer is just as important for the longevity of your locks as it is for its health. A dry shampoo can be a helpful quick-fix for misbehaving hair during the humid months. I haven’t had much luck with dry shampoos, probably because my hair is so fine, oily-prone, and all-around finicky. I erred on the cautious side when deciding to try this new dry shampoo and luckily, was able to receive a generous sample thanks to Integrity Botanicals’ free sample program. (You need to shop here! Besides from great promotions and products, with every order you get to choose 3 free samples from anything on the site. Lots of great green beauty and skincare brands. I highly recommend!)

I took this dry shampoo with me while traveling and was really pleased with how well my fussy hair responded. Normally, dry shampoo causes my hair to feel brittle, rough, and left with a gummy texture. From the first use, OLO’s Healthy Locks didn’t suck out the moisture or texture of my hair, in fact it amazingly gave me more volume and soft, healthy texture. This is the only dry shampoo that honestly made me feel happy with my non-shampooed hair! I credit the gentle, beneficial, natural ingredients featured in this dry shampoo such as Georgia kaolin clay, hyularonic acid, and silica rich bamboo extract which naturally absorb oils and strengthen hair follicles. I feel these ingredients were effective in nourishing my locks rather than just controlling oil. This product helped maintain the cleanliness of my hair and made my hair feel out-of-the-shower-fresh! If you were captivated by the scent of the Gardenia Body Serum, you will also love the lush floral fragrance of Healthy Locks, which keeps hair fresh and relaxes the senses.

Ingredients: oryza sativa (rice) starch, organic zea mays (corn) starch, kaolin, sodium bicarbonate, tapioca starch, bambusa (bamboo) arundinacea stem extract, silica (and) sodium hyaluronate, proprietary natural and organic fragrance compounds

{Unfortunately, it seems that SkinFare has gone out of business. I never received notice from the brand and it seems they have slowly and silently closed. 🙁 All links in my post have been removed to avoid any confusion.

I haven’t received any responses from the brand to my past inquiries but should I ever hear back from them or the brand happens to re-open, I will let everyone know. It’s a shame because I really loved these products!}

The soaps are made from 100% natural ingredients that are organic or wildcrafted, contain no preservatives, artificial ingredients, fragrance or any other harmful ingredients. More about Caru’s ingredients here.

stackedsoap3soappic.jpg

While the soaps themselves are gorgeous works of art, even the soap labels are beauties with their simple, vintage-inspired flare. All product labels are biodegradable and handmade from 100% post-consumer waste paper embedded with plant seeds so that you can give your waste a new life. You can plant these labels in soil and watch a non-invasive wildflower grow! (See more details here.) I admire the brand’s transparency and commitment to using simple, organic and wildcrafted ingredients and providing sustainable and beautiful product design. Full-size soaps are 4.5 oz for $9 each and travel-size soaps are 2oz for $7 each.

Here are my thoughts on the soaps I tried:

activated charcoal.jpg

  • Activated Charcoal + Dead Sea Salt Soap (Black):
This is a great face (and body) soap! It contains activated charcoal, which is super absorbent and detoxifying, and Dead Sea salt, which is jam packed with tons of beneficial minerals for your skin. We also added tea tree essential oil and neem oil, which will help keep your skin clear and blemish free. This soap is great for people with oil or aceneic skin, but is suitable for all skin types. The scent is sweet & musky with a mild citrus undertone. INGREDIENTS: Olive oil*, Coconut oil*, Reverse Osmosis water, Sustainable palm oil*, Cocoa Butter*, Beeswax*, Calendula flowers*, Chamomile flowers*, Chamomile essential oil*, Geranium essential oil*, essential oil blend* *organic

As the description mentions, this soap is really wonderful for washing your face with especially if you have breakouts and irritated or oily skin. Also lovely as a soap for the body, it’s gentle, hydrating and calms irritated skin. You can feel the activated charcoal working to detoxify and clarify skin of impurities. The soap leaves a smooth, fresh lather on the skin and reduces blemishes. The scent is unique but also subtle, you can smell a hint of sea salt combined with soothing notes of essential oils. I also can’t deny the deep, black tint of the activated charcoal which makes this soap feel especially exotic to use.

french green clay.jpg

  • French Green Clay Soap (Green):
French green clay is extremely absorbent and detoxifying. It is a natural clay mined in France and is often used as a facial mud mask. We make this soap with lavender and cedar essential oils which help keep your skin healthy and clear. This french green clay soap makes a great face and body soap. The scent is mild and refreshing, a blend of lavender with undertones reminiscent of a walk through a pine forest. INGREDIENTS: Olive oil*, Coconut oil*, Reverse osmosis water, Sustainable palm oil*, Cocoa butter*, French Green Clay, Lavender Essential oil*, Cedar Essential oil*, Essential oil blend* *organic

To me, this light, grassy green-colored soap is très chic. I love the scent (a lovely mix of lavender and cedar), the color (like a true, pea green) and the lather (super smooth). It was my favorite of the bunch that I savored for cleansing my face. It left my skin feeling very smooth, and hydrated. The delicious scent also lingers on the skin. This is recommended for dry or sensitive skin and it’s very gentle yet detoxifying and also helps to prevent blemishes or breakouts.

calendula chamomile.jpg

  • Calendula + Chamomile Soap (Yellow):
Calendula and chamomile are two yellow flowers that are renown for their skin healing properties. We use real organic calendula and chamomile flowers as well as luxurious roman chamomile essential oil and geranium essential oil. This is a very soothing soap great for cold weather dry skin. The scent is floral and slightly fruity with earthy undertones. INGREDIENTS: Olive oil*, Coconut oil*, Reverse Osmosis water, Sustainable palm oil*, Cocoa Butter*, Beeswax*, Calendula flowers*, Chamomile flowers*, Chamomile essential oil*, Geranium essential oil*, essential oil blend*  *organic

Chamomile is one of my favorite ingredients to ingest (like in tea) and to apply topically (like in cleansers or facial oils). This soap is very refreshing and soothing on dry, winter skin and is super calming to use on those typical stressful days. The two main ingredients: calendula and chamomile provide a soothing, luxurious lather and a sunny soap color, not to mention the pretty appearance of the flower petals.

Peppermint.jpg

  • Peppermint Soap (White):
This organic peppermint soap smells so wonderful! Made with organic peppermint essential oil, it will help you wake up in the morning, will leave you feeling refreshed during hot summer months and will brighten your spirits during long and dark winter days. This soap is gentle and makes a wonderful body soap. The scent is sweet and minty, just like peppermint 🙂 INGREDIENTS: Olive oil*, Coconut oil*, Reverse osmosis water, Sustainable palm oil*, Cocoa butter*, Beeswax*, Peppermint essential oil*, Essential oil blend*  *organic

I usually favor minty soaps to use while showering or bathing due to the refreshing and relaxing scent. This soap smells amazing! It’s the perfect sweet, minty peppermint scent that hydrates and relieves tension from my body. Like all the other soaps, this one also has a gentle, soothing lather and nourishes the skin.

Tea Tree .jpg

  • Tea Tree + Pumice Soap (Brown):
Pumice and apricot kernel meal are blended with tea tree essential oil to create a wonderful exfoliating soap. In the shower, this soap will invigorate and help scrub off dead skin, leaving your skin smooth and refreshed. This soap is also amazing for cleansing hands and feet. Tea tree essential oil’s anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties combined with the finely ground pumice work amazingly well together to get rid of that hard to clean oil and dirt. INGREDIENTS: Olive oil*, Coconut oil*, Reverse osmosis water, Sustainable palm oil*, Cocoa butter*, Beeswax*, Peppermint essential oil*, Essential oil blend*  *organic

The sandy grit of this soap feels wonderful on the hands and body. I enjoyed using this soap on my hands to exfoliate and smooth out skin. It’s also nice to use as a body soap to scrub off dead skin cells and to clean and maintain soft skin. The gritty texture is gentle and the remains are not too pebbly or hard on the skin. I enjoyed using this to smoothen the dry spots on my heels and the soles of my feet.

Drunk on Soap: Meow Meow Tweet Beer Shampoo Bar Review

MMTBeerSoap1-1.jpg

I’m a bit too enthusiastic when it comes to purchasing products that are a bit out of the ordinary. Anything that’s a little strange or different always catches my interest and I know I have to try it (after researching, of course). When I saw that the natural, Brooklyn-based apothecary, Meow Meow Tweet had a soap called the Beer Shampoo Bar ($10 for 5oz), I was immediately intrigued. First of all, have you ever seen or tried a bar of soap with beer in it? I couldn’t say I had. Plus, multi-use products are my weakness, I was dying to see if a soap bar doubling as shampoo would actually work.

MMTBeerSoap4

Formulated as a bar soap nourishing enough for your body as well as for your hair, MMT’s Beer Shampoo Bar really impressed me. I was expecting something strange for a soap containing beer, but the lovely combination of shea butter, hempseed oil, olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, aloe vera powder and grapefruit and rosemary essential oils result in a super nourishing and pleasant bar of soap. Plus, it smells absolutely heavenly! The soap has a nice, smooth lather that was very moisturizing on my dry, winter skin. {WARNING: Avoid getting any of this soap in your eyes or around the eye area, it burns like hell! I’m not sure if that’s the beer or general mixture of ingredients, but it’s just not pleasant…}

MMTBeerSoap5.jpg

The soap leaves a light, slightly oily residue on my hands which I like to rub into my hair. I’m not sure if I’d consider this a full-on shampoo product as it left my hair a bit tacky and I didn’t think it was enough to wash all my hair with but does work well for conditioning my hair. I like lathering it on my ends especially applied on the days when I don’t use shampoo. I’ve been trying to improve my habit of washing my hair from almost everyday to just 2 to 3 times per week. MMT’s Beer Shampoo Bar feels nice on those in-between days, when usually I just apply a dry shampoo and helps my hair to smell good and feel less greasy. How MMT describes this soap:

With a rich lather and it’s sweet, herbal scent, this soap was formulated to nourish your hair, but feel free to use it on your whole body too! Jojoba oils and hempseed oils condition the hair and scalp, while beer promotes shiny, bright hair. Aloe vera moisturizes, softens and detangles hair. Without a bottle, it’s got a lesser carbon footprint than your standard shampoo.MMT Soap Collage

I asked Tara and Jeff, the 2 artists and founders behind Meow Meow Tweet, if there was a story behind this unique multi-purpose soap and if there was a special reason for adding beer as an ingredient. Tara told me that the soap’s recipe initially stemmed from her memories of a hair care remedy her grandmother used to concoct consisting of mayonnaise, castor oil and beer.

When Jeff and I decided to make a recipe for a shampoo bar, it was because we wanted to make something that had less packaging and I loved the novelty of rubbing a bar of soap on my head. The recipe was approached holistically. Each one was chosen because of research into hair healthy ingredients. The oils and butters in the bar promote a healthy scalp and won’t strip your hair, the beer helps with shine and luster- the aloe mildly conditions and detangles. In the recipe, all of the water that would usually be used is replaced with an organic ale.

The scent and lather is too lovely to pass up. I’d recommend this to anyone interested in a beneficial, natural, handmade soap. This is also a generous size bar of soap at 5oz, so a little definitely goes a long way. It is lovingly hand-wrapped in an extremely cute design on post-consumer wastepaper (PCW) labels, all drawn and designed by MMT’s founders. I admire the simple, effective and organic ingredients as well as the transparency behind the company’s product formulation. I can’t wait to try more products from Meow Meow Tweet!

You can purchase the Beer Shampoo Bar here.

Easy as Pai: Pai Skincare Review

paiskincare1

When I started going green with my skincare routine, I knew I would have to invest in something that could handle my sensitive skin and was gentle for everyday use. After much research, sampling and searching, I took the plunge and indulged in products from Pai Skincare.

Pai Skincare is a UK-based brand whose products are much adored by beauty bloggers and skincare fanatics all over the world. The products contain organic ingredients (no synthetics), with no fragrances, alcohol or irritating chemicals. Most importantly, products are formulated with sensitive skin and allergy-prone skin types in mind. The brand also focuses on transparency in listing exactly what is put into their products, something I admire:

You won’t find “parfum” on any of our ingredient lists – a term that legally allows manufacturers to include up to 200 synthetic chemicals, including phthalates, in their products without declaring them on the label. Pai was the first skin care company to list all ingredients in plain English, so you don’t need a chemistry degree to understand what’s in the bottle.

There are many products you can purchase from Pai Skincare depending on your skin type. Here are the products I chose and love using everyday:

1) Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser: I love how creamy and hydrating this cleanser is! The formula is very gentle, has a pleasant (but not strong) scent and does not contain harsh detergents or alcohol like my old cleansers did which dried out my skin. This is moisturizing enough to use twice a day (morning and evening) although I’ve taken to using this most evenings as this cleanser is great for removing makeup as well. After cleansing, my face feels extremely soft! Using the recommended muslin cloth to exfoliate, the cleanser clears my face of any dirt and buildup and my blackheads instantly disappear. Recommended for all skin types.

2) Lotus & Orange Blossom Bioaffinity Tonic: This toner is great for spritzing on the face whenever you want a quick refresh or feel dry. I spritz this on my face after cleansing and it instantly soothes my skin. The citrus scent is heavenly and nothing about this formula is irritating. Rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids, this toner is great for hydration and protecting the skin. Not to mention it’s improves skin tone and texture by naturally balancing the pH in your face. Recommended for dry/sensitive skin.

3) Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil: My favorite product and the part of my skincare routine I look forward to the most, this oil is simply amazing in its ability to moisturize, protect and provide an overall glow to my skin. As someone with sensitive and reactive skin, I was never a believer in facial oils and was hesitant to try any. This oil opened my eyes to the wonders of facial oils and started a love affair. You only need to rub 2-3 drops of this elixir (ingredients include cold-pressed rosehip seeds) to the face for instant hydration and conditioning of the skin. Rich in Vitamin A, I’ve noticed my dark spots lesson after using this and my face looks brighter and feels healthier after use. If there’s one Pai product you should try, it’s this oil! Recommended for all skin types.

4) Geranium & Thistle Organic Combination Skin Cream: This moisturizer is extremely gentle and does not leave the skin oily or greasy. This cream doesn’t block pores and actually leaves quite a matte finish. I like using this before I apply my makeup and rotate between using alone or with the Rosehip Oil at night. I like how this cream smoothes and moisturizes the skin and feels very light on my face. You only need a few pumps to apply on your face and I did not find it caused any facial irritation or breakouts. It has a light, fresh scent reminiscent of lemons. Recommended for combination, oily, combination-sensitive skin.

These products form the basis of my daily skincare routine and I believe they have truly transformed my face. Every product is gentle and effective for my sensitive skin and include naturally-derived ingredients certified by the UK Soil Association. Read more about the company ethics here.

You can purchase Pai Skincare products from the U.S. website here. I’ve also found BeautyBay.com provides Pai products at lower prices but takes a bit longer to ship as it’ll ship directly from the UK.

Have you used any products from Pai Skincare? Which products would you want to try? I can’t wait to try the Brightening Exfoliator and Eye Cream next!

*These products were purchased by me and all opinions are based on my personal experience with the products.
