Winter Woes: Solutions for Chapped Lips

winterwoes2banner

Even though the holiday season is over and the New Year has started, it doesn’t mean the wrath of winter has completely subsided (at least, not for us lucky folk on the East Coast). The first of my annual winter woes are always chapped lips. Here’s how I’ve been managing a smooth pucker against this year’s cruel polar vortex:

winterwoes1banner.jpg

1.) EXFOLIATE- LUSH Mint Julips Lip Scrub ($9,95): If my sister hadn’t bought me this yummy, mint-tasting lip scrub from LUSH for my birthday last year, I probably would’ve tried (keyword there) to make a homemade lip scrub. However, being the lazy girl that I am, this scrub has been my go-to for getting rid of perpetual dry skin on my lips. At least twice a day, before applying makeup or eating, I exfoliate my lips with this lip scrub and follow up with a lip balm. I will say it’s a tad drying to my lips but it does the job. Containing jojoba and vegan sugar, it’s a perfect way to scrub away dry skin and maintain soft, smooth lips for the day.

Luxe: ILIA Beauty, Balmy Nights lip exfoliator stick, $26

2.) MOISTURIZE- S.W. Basics Lip Balm ($4): This balm is seriously the bomb! (Corny enough for you yet?) I haven’t found anything as moisturizing for my lips and doesn’t require constant reapplication. The flavors are delicious and if you’re not so keen on beeswax, they’re also offered in Vegan form. You can bet this sucker is always in my bag and on my lips everyday. I like that S.W. Basics products always have a simple ingredient lineup and this lip balm is no different. I recommend staying away from lip products with petroleum, camphor, menthol and salicylic acid which can contribute to dry and irritated lips and making you constantly apply lip balm.

Luxe: Tata Harper, Lip Treatment Be True, $28

3.) PROTECT- After treating my lips, I like to lock in the moisture and protect my pucker from further outside damage. I love a great, hydrating tinted balm to act as my base lip product for the day and to provide a hint of color whether or not I decide to wear more lip products. I’m really loving Gressa Skin’s Lip Boost BARE ($21)* for this step in my lip routine. Bare is a perfect muted pink for an everyday, natural, “your lips but better” look. It’s very moisturizing and has great staying power whether used alone or as a base with other lip products layered on top. Another tinted lip balm which has the same super moisturizing and pigmented characteristics are the ILIA Beauty Tinted Lip Conditioners. I use Arabian Knights ($26) daily as a moisturizing balm and for a flush of red on the lips.

4.) SEAL- This final step is sometimes optional for me, depending on the weather or how I’m feeling. I like to seal everything in on my lips with a hydrating, non-sticky gloss whether pigmented or clear. I absolutely hate walking around when it’s windy out and my hair sticking to my lips but on all other occasions, I think lip gloss is the best way to really set or finish the lips. I’m really loving the Red Apple Lipstick’s Mint to Be Lip Gloss in Honey Badger ($18.50)*.  (See swatches and my review on the lip gloss here.) It’s a perfect nude, pink that can be worn alone or on top of other lip colors. It’s not sticky or irritating and has a great lasting power plus, it’s deliciously minty-tasting! Another favorite is my Juice Beauty Reflecting Lip Gloss in Guava ($15)* which is very moisturizing and long-lasting with a subtle hint of shine and color.

Berry Sultry: ILIA Beauty Arabian Knights Lip Conditioner Review

ArabianKnights1

I confess, I’m a bit of a lipstick addict. Lip products get me excited because just adding a little bit of color to your lips can completely change your look without a total makeup overhaul. I’d been lusting over ILIA Beauty’s Arabian Knights Tinted Lip Conditioner ($24, 0.12 oz/3.5 g) for a while and finally purchased it during an online promotion a few months back. I thought it would be a perfect color for Fall and Winter.

Most lip colors that I tend gravitate to are in the berry or red hues and for Fall, I’m all about dark lips. Arabian Knights appears to be a deep, bold red in the tube however when applied to my lips it is a gorgeous, lightly tinted berry red. As this is a lip conditioner, Arabian Knights is very moisturizing and sheerer than most lipstick products. Castor seed oil, jojoba oil, beeswax and other natural ingredients contribute to the lip conditioner’s nourishing formula.

ArabianKnights2

I love the texture of Arabian Knights, because it’s light while also hydrating, reminiscent of a lip balm but also very pigmented and buildable in color.  This product did not make my lips chapped or dry and I can still apply lip balm underneath for added moisture though it’s not necessary.

“Arabian Knights offers a fantasy of mystery and seduction. The deep tones of violet, and burgundy melt together forming a beautiful berry stain. An ideal shade, easily carried from day to night.”

The scent of this lip conditioner is heavenly, very minty and fresh smelling. Arabian Knights lasts on the lips for quite a few hours but the best part is that it leaves a beautiful tint on lips. I can wear this color on my lips for about 3-4 hours until the full amount of color applied fades. Arabian Knights can be built up to a gorgeous darker berry-red hue or worn sheer for a hint of color. ArabianKnights4.jpg

I love wearing Arabian Knights during the day and in the evening. It looks great as a sheer berry tint for the day and with a few extra coats of color, I can turn that sheer color into a deeper, sultry red. I so enjoy the Tinted Lip Conditioner formula and the product’s versatility that I can’t wait to try more from ILIA!

I must be extremely hungry this week because most of the links I’ve gathered seem to be about food…oh well! 😉 A bit late this week, but Happy Thursday!

Maybe I should blame the book I’m currently reading, Ann Mah’s new novel, “Mastering the Art of French Eating: Lessons in Food and Love From a Year in Paris” (a clever play on Julia Child’s quintessential cookbook title). LustList: A Night for Green Beauty Picks

LustList: A Night for Green Beauty Picks
Wow, the long Labor Day holiday weekend definitely flew by! I needed a long weekend to relax. And I can’t believe tomorrow is finally the biggest event for Green Beauty during New York Fashion Week: “A Night for Green Beauty”! I’m excited, anxious and know I’ll be squirming in my cubicle until I’m able to dash out of work and hop on the subway. It’ll be a fun night of makeovers, presentations, shopping and mingling.
My wallet’s been burning in my purse as I’ve been saving to buy some of the incredible products that will be featured at the event. Here are just a few that are on my list:
1) Kjaer Weis MascaraBy now you should now that everyone has been gushing over the wonders of Kjaer Weiss mascara. It’s a luxurious, natural, high-performance mascara that I must have. If there’s anything for me to buy from this event, I know it’s this mascara. Besides the gorgeous, super-chic packaging, did I mention it’s refillable?
2) Kahina Giving Beauty Brightening Serum I still suffer from the wrath of hyper-pigmentation and post-acne spots and I’ve heard great things about this Brightening Serum. It’s formulated with many soothing and effective organic ingredients such as argan oil, Japanese wakame seaweed, and green tea. I also love  the brand’s commitment to cultural and environmental sustainability, specifically that donations are made to the Berber women of Morocco, who are solely responsible for the farming and production of argan oil. Read my post about argan oil and the Berber women here.
3) ILIA Beauty Tinted Lip Conditioner in Crimson & Clover I’ve been wanting to get my hands on ILIA’s Tinted Lip Conditioners but I’ve been too picky with lip shades to make a decision. I hope at the event I can swatch a couple I like. ILIA’s Crimson & Clover is a beautifully, bold red which has been brought back as a limited-edition shade. I hope this is available at the event otherwise the shade Bang Bang is my next option!
4) Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm I love multi-purpose products and I’d love to try this cool stick from Revolution Organics which has been talked about by many. It’s 100% natural with 85% organic ingredients and provides a healthy glow as well as a tint. The website describes the product as an “all-in-one balm infuses lips, cheeks, eyes, and décolletage with a natural, dewy radiance. Perfectly portable and ideal for on the go, the easy-to-use formula provides skincare and color in one for a hydrating hint of tint.”
5) One Love Organics Skin Savour– In my previous post, I mentioned I received a sample of this product and absolutely love it! I’d like to purchase a full-size as it’s great for removing makeup, moisturizing, and taming hair frizz.
6) La Bella Figura Bohemia Verde Aromatic Hair Elixir– I can’t not purchase something from the awesome brand hosting the event! I’m always looking for good, natural hair product that will tame my annoying hair flyaways and La Bella Figura’s Hair Elixir sounds divine. Not only will the Hair Elixir smooth frizz, it sounds like it will moisturize and maintain the health of one’s hair due to the array of nutritive oils and natural ingredients in the product.
That’s about it for this lust list but I can’t be sure how crazy I might get!
Are you attending the event tomorrow? What products are on your list?

My Birthday Wishlist: Beauty

Birthday Wishlist: Beauty

Guess what? My birthday is this Friday! I cannot believe it will already be August, the summer is just flying by and I am not ready to be one year older…okay maybe it’s not all that bad!

Of course I was easily able to round up some of the products I’m currently lusting after for my very own birthday list. Now if only I were to get all the things on this list…(Are you paying attention, family and friends? haha) Looking back, I could have been a bit more extravagant in my wishing but what can I say, I’m trying to be realistic even in my dreams…

1) Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Desired Glow, $54– I’m a lover of cream blushes and there’s nothing I love more than blushes that also double as bronzer. This beautiful suble tan is said to be perfect for light to medium complexions and is easily blendable, plus the ingredients are 95% organic and how could you not love the super-chic packaging?

2) Kjaer Weis Mascara, $38– Okay, I’m on a Kjaer Weis-kick but this mascara has been raved about by almost every beauty-loving eco-chick and is said to be lengthening, long-lasting and luxurious. As far as organic mascaras go, it is the “creme de la creme” and is also refillable (refills are sold separately) so as to avoid bacteria buildup. So cool!

3) RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in Promise, $36– I’ve said it before but I love multi-use products and this RMS Beauty product is one I’ve been dying to try. The Lip2Cheek is a cream product that can be used as a lip or cheek tint. Promise is described as a “warm salmon with a subtle warmth” so I believe it’d be a great pop of natural color on my pale skin, perfect for the remainder of summer.

4) ILIA Beauty Tinted Lip Conditioner in Bang Bang, $24– I’ve been dying to try ILIA’s Tinted Lip Conditioners as my lips are normally dry and this specific product is supposedly very moisturizing and soothing. Bang Bang is a popular colors as it’s a beautiful, sheer red that is easily buildable.

5) One Love Organics Morning Glory Brightening Complexion Booster, $48- I’d really love to add some serums to my skincare routine and this One Love Organics serum sounds amazing. The claims are that it “counteracts dullness, puffiness, and unevenness with a intelligent combination of organic ingredients and omega acids. Plus, the zesty lemon peppermint scent provides a natural mood boost.” All the ingredients are soothing to the skin and are organic/plant based including Vegan-sourced Omega 3 fatty acids which “smooth lines and defend against environmental damage.” I also love that the skincare line partners with different artists and designers for unique, attractive packaging designs.

6) RGB Nail Polish in Pool, $18- I’m really more of a nude nail polish color kind of girl but there’s nothing like a beautiful pop of color and from a five-free* nail polish line like RGB (*Contains no Formaldehyde, no Toluene, no DBP, no Formaldehyde Resin, no Camphor). Maybe it’s the influence of the summer season but I’m loving this aptly named, bright baby-blue color in Pool. Perfect against tanned, summer skin whether lounging outside or out on the town. This is also from RGB’s Summer limited edition nail color line.

7)  Bdellium Tools Green Bambu brush set, $89.10- There is nothing more that I love than beautiful makeup besides beautiful makeup brushes. Not only are these brushes super cute (they’re green-colored!) but they are made from soft, synthetic, vegan bristles and sustainable bamboo handles. This set includes 15 professional-grade eco-friendly brushes for face, eyes and brows in a nice rollup pouch.

8) Pai Skincare Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser, $50-$70 depending on size- I’ve been lusting over all the products from Pai Skincare as many beauty bloggers and makeup artists have raved about this organic, London-based skincare line that focuses specifically on sensitive skin types. I have very sensitive, reactive skin and am curious about this cleanser, a top-selling product. It’s recommended for all skin types but works specifically well for dry and sensitive skin. The formula is alcohol and detergent-free which maintains the skin’s natural oil balance and doesn’t irritate skin. It has hydrating properties, while replenishes the skin with Omega 3 and Vitamins A, B & E and also acts as an eye makeup remover.

9) Alima Pure Satin Finishing Powder, $20- I love the concept of mineral foundation, though I’m always hesitant to try it due to my super-dry skin (it has never been a fan or mineral or powder-based foundation). Alima Pure is one of the best natural, mineral makeup lines and I think their Satin Finishing Powder sounds just divine for setting my makeup. The powders come in 5 colors to suit most complexions and the names are just as pretty: Yuki, Keiko, Hanae, Ami, Sayomi. I also love that this product is free of many yucky ingredients: “no bismuth oxychloride (BOC-Free), no carmine(ci 75470-Free), no nanoparticles, non-comedorgenic (won’t clog pores), high pigmented”.

Have you tried any of these products? What’s on your current wish list?

A Fresh Look for Any Summer Event

Fresh Summer

Summer is officially here and it’s heating up! I like to keep things simple as the weather gets warmer, so simple, neutral makeup are the base of my beauty routine. Stay cool and make a splash at any summer event in a light, flowing dress paired with  nude espadrilles, large sunglasses, wrap bracelets and a brightly, colored crossover bag.

When it’s hot outside, I tend to simplify my makeup routine so products like the ILIA Beauty Multi-Task Stick, which can be worn as a blush, lip tint or eyeshadow, are top on my summer makeup list. A moisturizing concealer is a must when I dont want to wear much on my face and the 100% Pure Cosmetics Fruit Pigmented Concealer is not only made from super fruits that are good for your skin but it also includes SPF 20 to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.

Looking forward to kicking off the summer with more July fourth celebrations this weekend!

What are some products you love to use as we enter the summer season?
