One main motivation in creating my blog was to educate others about beauty, health and sustainable solutions. Nothing peaks my interest more than learning about new technology and advancements in health and esthetics and sharing what I’ve learned with others. A member of the Juice Beauty team, Annalise told me about the new complexion analysis machines called VISIA machines being set up nationwide at Whole Foods markets and larger beauty stores. I was curious and also a bit scared at the thought of having my face analyzed by a machine but I followed Annalise’s suggestion to go for a free VISIA skin analysis at my local Whole Foods.
Using special imaging technology, the VISIA machine digitally captures 8 different properties of your skin analyzing spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, brown spots, red areas and porphyrins (natural oil and bacteria buildup). These categories are further analyzed as percentile scores depicting how the condition of your complexion ranks among other individuals of the same age, gender and skin type. The higher the percentage, the better your skin is within those problem areas.
An in-house, certified esthetician will then review and discuss the images and the analyzed summary of your skin. They will also recommend a personalized skincare regime to improve your complexion including specific product recommendations. Luckily, you get a printed copy of your visual complexion analysis and the list of recommended skincare products. All your information is stored in the VISIA machine at the analysis location. You can go back for a follow-up consultation after you’ve tried any purchased products to see how you skin measures up after treatment.
At my local Whole Foods, the 2 brands offered for product recommendation are from Juice Beauty and a brand called MyChelle Dermaceuticals. Since I’ve tried a few products from Juice Beauty already, I was interested in trying out and adding the MyChelle products to my skin regime.
How’d my complexion analysis go? Thankfully, it wasn’t as scary as I’d thought! I actually learned more about my skin and what I can do to improve my current skin regime. Overall, I’d recommend everyone to go get a VISIA skin analysis and learn about your skin and how you can improve it!
Out of the 8 complexion categories, my skin needs the most work on texture and porphyrins. Here is how the VISIA analysis from MyChelle describes the 2 categories I scored lowest on:
“Texture measures the skins smoothness by identifying the hills and valleys of the skin. Raised areas are pimples, milia, blackheads, dead skin cells, shown in yellow. Indentions are fine lines, open pores, open hair follicles shown in blue.”
To improve the texture of my skin, it’s recommended to exfoliate more to remove the unwanted dead skin cells and produce smoother skin. Exfoliation will also allow for additional products to more easily absorb and penetrate the skin. I do realize I’ve become lazy in exfoliating my skin and finding the best product for my skin. I’ve been trying various methods to regularly exfoliate in my weekly skin routine. To improve the fine lines within the texture category, use of more anti-aging products should be used to prevent fine lines and future wrinkles.
“Porphyrins are natural bacteria and oil. The bacterial excretions can become lodged in pores and lead to acne. This score varies from person to person and it is ok to have a natural level of bacteria.”
To improve the amount of porphyrins, it is recommended to cleanse the face regularly and make sure all items that may come in close contact with your face such as, makeup brushes, cell phones and pillow cases are kept clean after daily use. This is one category in which I have definitely become more aware of my habits and to improve my facial bacteria and oil buildup.
Read about all the VISIA complexion analysis categories and recommended MyChelle products here.
I ended up only purchasing one MyChelle product which I thought would add to my current skincare routine, the Clear Skin Serum. This serum was recommended in my facial analysis because it will minimize shine/oil, remove pores and prevent acne. I’ll be reviewing this product in a future post. Overall, I’d recommend everyone to go get a VISIA skin analysis and learn about your skin and how you can improve it!
What are your thoughts on skin analysis? Have you tried the VISIA complexion analysis machine? Let me know!
This post was inspired by my own curiosity about the well-being of my skin and was not sponsored in any way. All opinions are my own. Special thanks to my friend, May who joined me at Whole Foods and snapped some photos of our skin analysis trip!
Trusted by many makeup artists and celebrities, Vapour Beauty is a leading brand in innovative, high-quality performing organic and natural beauty products. All their products have certified organic and 100% natural ingredients, are cruelty-free and use minimal recycled and recyclable packaging. Plus, Vapour’s foundation shades span a large variety (and a few more have just been added) so anyone ranging from very fair to girls of darker complexions can find a suitable shade.
I have been wanting to try Vapour Beauty products for a long time and I’m excited to shop the birthday sale!
One of my earliest memories of shopping for makeup was during the summer before 8th grade. I had triumphantly received a gift card to Sephora for my birthday as a gift from a friend. With only a mundane knowledge of sparkly lip gloss and neon nail polish, I dragged my mom to the makeup haven that was Sephora to make my very first “upscale” makeup purchase.
Always the researching geek, weeks prior to our Saturday shopping trip, I scoured my teen glossies and read up on which hot makeup products I would want to purchase. And that’s when I first laid eyes on what would be a 10+ year obsession with…. the famous Nars Multiple Stick.
I am a sucker for products that allow me to multi-task; highlighter/pen duos, a purse that is a clutch, wallet and crossover bag in one, a dress that can be worn 20 ways (see: American Apparel)–you get the idea. So, as a teenager with a limited knowledge of (and experience with) makeup, the coveted Nars Multiple– a tinted lip, cheek and eye product in one beautifully packaged stick was like an epiphany to me. It also seemed like the best bang for my (gift card) buck.
As I pulled my mother towards the Nars section in Sephora, and stood face to face with my holy grail, an eager Sephora associate stepped up to us and politely asked if we needed any help. I told her that I was looking to purchase a Nars Multiple because I loved how multifunctional it was. She wrinkled her brow, frowned with disdain and said “But you’re so young to be using a Nars product. Why don’t we try something alittle more…fun? You’re too young to be trying something so boring.” I was confused, was she telling me I shouldn’t buy the one thing I had been obsessing over because she was assuming the interests of my age demographic? She explained that the Nars brand was usually purchased by older women or girls who had more makeup experience. My adolescent heart took a dive and feeling ignorant of the associate’s “educational” statement about what I should be buying as a teenage girl, I listened.
The associate steered me over to all things “fun”, sparkly and brightly colored courtesy of the hot brands of my youth: Urban Decay, Hard Candy and Stila (brands I actually grew to love). She brushed on some opalescent green shadow to my lids (“Mold” by Urban Decay), swatched a bubble-gum pink polish for my stubby nails (Hard Candy polishes which hustled teenage girls with the removable plastic, jeweled finger rings housed on top), and picked out an equally bright pink Stila lipgloss. Satisfied with her handiwork, she asked if there was anything else I could do and through my glazed eyes I watched her proudly walk away.
Not knowing what else to do and with a bunch of popular makeup products in my hands, I purchased everything the pushy associate had given me, the Nars Multiple only a faded dream in the back of my mind. While we headed to the register, I added one more product to my makeup spoils, one that made me rest easier on my guided decision to erase the Nars Multiple from my heart: the ever-popular Stila Convertible Color in Peony. Still a classic today, the Stila Convertible Color helped mend my broken heart over the Nars Multiple as it is a 2-in one cream blush and lip product housed in a cutely colored compact mirror.
Years have passed and though I’ve been distracted by other coveted makeup products, I’ve still been dreaming about owning my very own Nars Multiple. I wonder about when I do purchase one soon (maybe for my upcoming birthday), if I will feel justified for that time when a Sephora associate told me to buy makeup better suited for my age or if I will feel no differently and just accept the fact that I didn’t listen to my heart’s one strong opinion in a shopping matter…
